JOOLA Ben Johns Hyperion CFS Review

The signature paddle of the world's #1 player — does it live up to the hype?

Our Verdict

9.0/10

The Hyperion CFS is a legitimate pro-level paddle. It delivers excellent power, outstanding spin, and the elongated shape provides extra reach. It's not for everyone — but for aggressive power players, it's one of the best.

The Ben Johns Factor

Ben Johns isn't just sponsored by JOOLA — he actively develops his signature paddles. The Hyperion CFS reflects his playing style: aggressive, powerful, and built for players who want to dictate points rather than react to them.

Carbon Friction Surface (CFS)

The raw carbon fiber face generates exceptional spin. The texture bites the ball aggressively, allowing for heavy topspin drives and wicked slice serves. It's one of the grippiest surfaces we've tested.

Hyperfoam Edge

The foam-injected edge provides stability and enlarges the sweet spot. Edge shots that would feel dead on other paddles still have decent pop on the Hyperion.

Elongated Shape

The extra length provides more reach — helpful for covering the court and extending for wide balls. The tradeoff is a slightly smaller sweet spot width-wise, but the Hyperfoam edge compensates.

On-Court Performance

Power

This is a power paddle. Drives have serious pace, and put-aways are emphatic. The weight (8.0-8.4 oz) contributes to the pop. If you like to hit through opponents, the Hyperion enables that style.

Spin

Outstanding. The CFS face grabs the ball like few other surfaces. Topspin drives dip sharply, and you can generate spin on serves that gives opponents trouble. This is a strength of the paddle.

Control

Good but not exceptional. The power-first design means touch shots require more finesse. Soft game players may find it less forgiving than control-oriented paddles. It's a tradeoff for the power benefits.

Who Should Buy It?

The Hyperion CFS is designed for aggressive, power-oriented players at the 4.0+ level. If you like to hit hard, generate spin, and take control of points, this paddle will amplify your game.

Finesse players who prioritize touch and control should look elsewhere — perhaps the Selkirk Vanguard or JOOLA Solaire.

The Bottom Line

Ben Johns plays with this paddle for a reason — it's built for domination. The Hyperion CFS delivers power and spin at the highest level. It's not the most forgiving paddle, but for players with the skills to use it, it's exceptional.
